I think times have changed. I like to wave at other riders, but these days the roads (especially city traffic) are so busy you're best off keeping your eyes focused on the road.
Sometimes I can wave at other riders, sometimes I'm too busy paying attention to the road to respond to someone else's wave. It doesn't mean I'm being a jerk; I'm just too busy watching out for my own skin.
